Bed-board Tomb Cluster

The Bed-board Tomb Cluster is a cultural heritage site protected at the county level in Qujiang District.

The Bed-board Tomb Cluster is situated on a hillside behind the No. 4 Middle School of Qujiang County, east of Wushi Town in Qujiang County. It lies about 500 meters south of the Beijiang River. Dating back to the late Neolithic Age, the site spans 2,000 square meters. It was discovered in 1983 and excavated between 1987 and 1988 by the archaeological team of the Guangdong Provincial Museum, covering an area of 976 square meters. A total of 15 tombs were cleared— all rectangular vertical pit graves oriented east-west. The tomb walls had been fire-hardened, and some tombs had stone slabs laid at the bottom. Burial objects were mostly placed at the eastern and western ends of the tomb floor, and in some cases, broken artifacts were distributed between the tomb base and the fill soil. Excavated pottery items include cauldrons, dou (food vessels), jars, pots, ding (tripods), steamers, three-legged plates, ring-footed plates, and spinning whorls. Stone artifacts comprise adzes, picks, chisels, axes, arrowheads, rings, hairpins, and cong (ritual objects). Some tombs yielded clusters of carbonized rice grains. The artifact characteristics match those of Phase II culture at the Shixia site and belong to the later stage of Shixia culture.

In 1984, the People’s Government of Qujiang County designated it as a cultural heritage protection unit.

Wushi Town: Wushi is one of the key towns in the southern part of Qujiang County, Shaoguan City. It is 10 kilometers north of the county seat of Qujiang, 5 kilometers from the Maba exit of the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, and 4 kilometers from the Shaxi exit. To the south, it borders Kengkou Town in the same county; to the east, it neighbors Wengyuan County and Shaxi Town in the same county; to the west, it is backed by the Beijiang River, across which lies Zhangshi Town in the same county. The administrative area of Wushi Town covers 66.3 square kilometers, with a population of nearly 13,000, including 7,200 agricultural residents and 5,800 government employees, workers, and residents.
