Tomb of Zhang Zizhou

The Tomb of Zhang Zizhou is a cultural relic protection site designated by Qujiang District.

The Tomb of Zhang Zizhou is situated on the eastern hillside of Pingpu Village, Zhoutian Town, Qujiang County. It is surrounded by rolling hills on the east, south, and north, and faces northwest, offering a view of the Shaoshi Mountains and the Zhen River. The tomb remains intact. The main façade is semicircular, 2.3 meters in height and 2.95 meters in width at the base. A 15-centimeter-wide horizontal line built with side bricks divides the façade into upper and lower sections. The lower section is 0.81 meters high and divided into three bays. The left and right bays are each constructed with a 0.7×0.81-meter red sandstone block, while the central bay is 0.81 meters high and 0.7 meters wide, built with offset blue bricks in a flat pattern resembling a sealed door. The upper section is 1.34 meters high and constructed entirely with flat-laid blue bricks. When viewed head-on, the façade appears as five bays with a double eave design, featuring a 0.32×0.45-meter tombstone embedded in the center. The inscription reads “Tomb of Zizhou of the Lingyan Pavilion,” with the upper part of the inscription weathered and the lower part stating “Donated for restoration by Sun Jian □□.” Above the tombstone is another embedded horizontal lintel, inscribed in relief with the four characters “Fengdu Shaoxing.” Originally, stone sheep and stone horses flanked the tomb, and a spirit way stele stood 25 meters in front of the tomb, though it has now fallen and its inscription is no longer legible.

Zhang Zizhou was the grandfather of Zhang Jiuling, a chancellor during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty. According to Zhang Jiuling’s “Epitaph,” it states: “His ancestors were from Fanyang, and his great-great-grandfather (Zhang Junzheng) took office and settled here due to his official position…”

In 1984, the People's Government of Qujiang County designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.
