Accra is the capital and largest port city of Ghana, located in the southeastern part of the country, along the Gulf of Guinea. As the national center of politics, economy, and culture, Accra is also a key market for cocoa beans and diamonds. The city boasts an extensive road network and is home to Ghana’s only international airport—Kotoka International Airport. Due to challenging breakers, cargo handling mainly takes place at the outer port of Tema, located 27 kilometers to the east.

Famous tourist sites in Accra include the University of Ghana, the Academy of Sciences, museums, botanical gardens, the Independence Arch on Black Star Square, the National Theatre built with Chinese aid, the Elmina Castle slave fort, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, among others. Ghana is renowned worldwide for its traditional crafts, most notably the vibrantly colored Kente cloth. The Ashanti and Ewe peoples have been weaving Kente for over a thousand years. Adinkra printed fabric is also deeply connected to the Ashanti people, with more than 60 different Adinkra symbols, each having its own unique name in the Ashanti language. Most hotels in Ghana offer artworks and handicrafts for sale.
