Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum is the final resting place of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. Nkrumah was the founder of the Republic of Ghana, a pioneer of the African liberation movement, and is revered as the “Father of Ghana.” Throughout his life, he advocated for Pan-Africanism and promoted the non-violent unification of Africa to establish a United States of Africa. He was one of the founders of the Organization of African Unity and advocated for the establishment of an African High Command to address crises on the continent. He also famously stated, “Political independence is meaningless without economic independence.”

To commemorate Nkrumah’s indelible historical contributions, a grand mausoleum was built in 1992 at the site where he declared Ghana’s independence. The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum is located in downtown Accra, covering an area of about 4 hectares. The mausoleum is surrounded by a waist-high wall and lush greenery; the park features verdant lawns spread out on both sides of a fountain pool. At the center of the memorial park stands a large, uniquely designed, solemn, and majestic light brown marble mausoleum. The great figure of modern Ghanaian history, Kwame Nkrumah, rests beneath this mausoleum, and his statue is erected in front of it. In front of the statue are two fountain pools, with sculptures of black figures playing musical instruments in the pools.

Nkrumah was friendly toward China. During his tenure, he visited China twice, and the late Chinese Premier - also visited Ghana. In early 1999, - then Vice President of China, paid homage to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum during his visit to Ghana and laid a wreath at the tomb of Nkrumah, a longtime friend of the Chinese people.
