Accra Sports Stadium

Accra Sports Stadium is a multi-functional, multi-purpose stadium primarily used for association football matches, with a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators. In 2004, it was renamed Ohene Djan Stadium after Ghana’s first Director of Sports, Ohene Djan. However, this renaming sparked significant controversy, as many believed the stadium represented the city of Accra itself—a symbol of civic pride—rather than an individual. Consequently, on June 16, 2011, the stadium’s name was reverted to its original title, “Accra Sports Stadium.”

During the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations, Accra Sports Stadium hosted a total of nine matches. As the venue for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, it underwent renovations, reinforcements, and modernization to meet FIFA international standards. The stadium also serves as a training ground for two of Africa’s most renowned clubs—the Hearts of Oak Sporting Club and the New Edubiase United Football Club.
