Black Star Square

Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is a public square in Accra. Facing north and covering a vast area, the square was established to commemorate Ghana’s independence.

Upon entering Black Star Square, the first thing you’ll notice is an elegant arc formed by Ghanaian flagpoles—an impressive sight. Next, you’ll see the Independence Arch and the Unknown Soldier’s Monument, both symbols of Ghana’s sovereignty. The Independence Arch resembles the Arc de Triomphe, with a black five-pointed star at its top. In front of the Unknown Soldier’s Monument burns a red eternal flame, which is lit during commemorative ceremonies. Additionally, there is a uniquely designed three-tiered yellow arch structure. The main stage is located on the third tier, supported by three gracefully curved arches, giving the architecture a distinctive style. With the vast sea stretching out behind, standing on this stage offers a truly majestic view.

Black Star Square serves as a venue for important national events. During national holidays or military parades, the square becomes a sea of people, buzzing with energy and excitement. Even on regular days, many visitors come here to explore. It has also become a popular recreational spot for residents of Accra.
