National Theatre of Ghana

The National Theatre of Ghana was constructed with a loan from the Chinese government, which began in 1990 as a gift to Ghana. The theatre covers a total area of 15,500 square meters, with a total construction area of 1,111,896 square meters. It is divided into four main functional zones—A, B, C, and D—as well as various auxiliary buildings, making it a fully equipped, multi-purpose performance venue.

The theatre was completed and put into use by the end of 1992. As an iconic landmark of Ghana, its unique and aesthetically pleasing architectural design has made it a symbol of Accra’s cityscape. The National Theatre of Ghana includes an auditorium, a sturdy and beautifully designed stage and rehearsal area, VIP reception rooms, and a fountain. For over a decade, the theatre has played a significant role in enhancing cultural and artistic exchanges between the people of China and Ghana, as well as enriching the cultural and artistic life of the Ghanaian people.

Over time, some of the theatre's facilities and functions have become outdated and can no longer meet new demands. In response to a request from the Ghanaian side, the Chinese government has undertaken renovation work on the theatre since March 2005 through grant assistance, aiming to further enhance its functionality.
