The Historic Centre of Sighișoara
The historic district of Sighișoara was founded by German craftsmen and merchants, known as the Transylvanian Saxons. It stands as an exceptional embodiment of Transylvanian Saxon culture. After enjoying over 850 years of civilization, the city’s ruins and monuments will forever preserve their unique architectural artistry. The historic area authentically retains the characteristics of a medieval small fortified town.
For centuries, these architectural features held immeasurable strategic significance in Central Europe and played a pivotal role in the development of commerce. Sighișoara Castle, symbolizing the city, is situated on the highest point within the town and is surrounded by a 920-meter-long city wall with 14 defensive towers. Sighișoara is a remarkable example of an acropolis and also represents the perfect fusion of Latin-Eastern and Southeastern European Byzantine-Orthodox cultures in Central Europe.
The unstoppable migration of the traditionally cultural Saxons once posed a threat to the revival of Sighișoara’s architectural heritage. Nevertheless, as a historic district, Sighișoara is not only one of the most beautiful scenic areas in Southeastern Europe, but also boasts a profound and thought-provoking cultural background. With an 850-year history, this culture will continue to thrive through the styles of its buildings and urban monuments.
