Apuseni Mountains

The Apuseni Mountains are a series of rolling mountain ranges located in Transylvania, Romania. They form a branch of the northwestern Western Carpathians and lie north of the Mureș River. In Romanian, their name means "the Western Mountains," and they are also referred to as the "Western Romanian Mountains" or "the Western Hills." Their highest peak is Bihor Peak, standing at 1,849 meters above sea level. The mountains are dotted with approximately 400 caves and karst formations of varying sizes, and also feature plains and settlements. Here, the awe-inspiring power of nature is displayed in full force.

Stretching about 88 kilometers in length and 68 kilometers in width, the Apuseni Mountains have a predominantly radial ridge structure, with the Bihor Mountain — composed of crystalline rock — at its center. The western, central, and southern areas feature well-developed karst landscapes, including deep valleys, steep cliffs, and unique caves. The foothills in the west are rich in bauxite, while the Metaliferi Mountains in the south contain abundant metal ores such as gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Beyond its rich mineral resources, the Apuseni Mountains boast breathtaking natural scenery: undulating high peaks, gently flowing streams, endless green meadows and colorful wildflowers in summer, and pure white snowscapes in winter. The area's karst caves are especially stunning and attract visitors from around the world all year round.
