Sibiu

Sibiu is located in the southern part of Transylvania, Romania, straddling the Cibin River, a tributary of the Olt River, and serves as the capital of Sibiu County. The city is one of the most prosperous in Romania, attracting the most foreign investment in the country, and has been recognized as one of the “Eight Most Livable Rural Cities in Europe.”

In 2007, Sibiu was designated the European Capital of Culture for the year, significantly boosting tourism development. Sibiu and its surrounding areas are among the most frequently visited destinations by tourists in Romania. This region preserves historic landscapes and medieval military defense architecture, which were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Additionally, Sibiu and its environs host numerous galleries and museums, covering themes such as art, archaeology, anthropology, and history—making them popular tourist attractions. The Făgăraș Mountains, located approximately 20 kilometers from Sibiu, are also a major sightseeing destination, featuring many holiday villas available for rent. Moreover, this mountain range was once inhabited by the ancient Saxons, and is home to many Saxon churches that visitors can explore.

Sibiu boasts several museums, including the Brukenthal Museum, the Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, and the Brukenthal National Museum, among others. The Brukenthal Museum is the oldest museum in Romania, established in 1871, and houses a rich and diverse collection.
