Bacău is located in Romania’s historical region of Moldavia, in Bacău County at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains and along the Bistrița River. It serves as the county seat of Bacău County. The city is the 15th largest in Romania and a major urban center in Bacău County.

Bacău is home to several important universities and colleges in Romania. It is also the birthplace of renowned poets George Bacovia and Vasile Alecsandri. The local history museum houses significant artifacts from the Dacian period to the present day, each silently telling stories of ancient history. The city also has the Victor Vâlcovici Astronomical Observatory, which offers great opportunities for stargazing. Around Christmas each year, the city hosts the traditional Moldavian Winter Festival, attracting folk artists from all over the country to experience its rich traditional culture.
