Baia Mare

Baia Mare is a city in northwestern Romania, built along the Săsar River, serving as the capital of Maramureș County. It is the 17th most populous city in Romania and also an important railway and highway hub.

Baia Mare is one of Romania’s most significant coal mining centers, with a history of gold and silver mining dating back over 2,000 years. The city square in the downtown area preserves a large number of medieval buildings, the oldest of which dates back to 1440 and is located on the eastern side of the square, currently used for temporary exhibitions. Standing in the square is the 120-foot-tall Stephen Tower, which has a history of about 600 years. The Baia Mare Art Museum houses works of art from Maramureș County from the late 19th century to the present. Additionally, visitors can explore the Baia Mare History and Archaeology Museum, the Baia Mare Ethnography Museum, and the Baia Mare Mining Museum.
