Introduction Slovakia has a forest coverage rate of up to 40%, with nine national parks across the country. Tatra National Park is one of the most famous. It was jointly established by Slovakia and Poland in 1948, with the majority of the park located in Slovakia and a smaller portion in Poland. Many people visit Tatra National Park for hiking. The park offers a variety of hiking and cycling routes, ranging from easy to challenging. Some of the more difficult trails are only open from June 15 to October 30 each year. Of course, Tatra also has cable cars that can take you up to over 2,600 meters above sea level, very close to the highest peak of the High Tatras—Gerlach Peak, which stands at 2,655 meters. At this altitude, the mountain slopes remain snow-covered even in summer. You can grab a coffee at the small restaurant here, find a seat on the wooden sun deck built on the snow, and quietly soak up some sun.
