Another country added to work-and-travel options: Slovakia launches program in June

An agreement on a work-and-travel program was reached between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Slovakia, with the two countries completing the signing of a “Memorandum of Understanding on Work-and-Travel” today (15). The program is scheduled to launch this June. Slovakia is the sixth European country, following Germany, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, and Hungary, and the 11th country worldwide to sign a similar agreement with us.

Upon implementation, Taiwan and Slovakia will annually offer 100 spots each, issuing one-year work-and-travel visas to eligible applicants. The visa is available to youths aged 18 to 35. In the future, young people from both countries can visit each other’s nations through tourism, working, or self-funded study abroad programs to learn languages, experience local cultures, customs, and social dynamics firsthand, enhance mutual understanding, and build friendships.

 

Slovakia is a landlocked Central European country with a population of about 5.5 million and an area of over 49,000 square kilometers. Its official language is Slovak. Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Slovakia became an independent nation, establishing a democratic multi-party political system. It joined the European Union in 2004 and is also a member of international organizations such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Schengen Agreement, and the Visegrád Group. Geographically, Slovakia borders Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, and the Czech Republic and Austria to the west. The country boasts rich natural landscapes, historical culture, and folk heritage. Its capital, Bratislava, is situated along the Danube River, contributing to a strong artistic atmosphere. Additionally, Slovakia’s second-largest city, Košice, was named the “European Capital of Culture 2013,” and Taiwan’s National Guoguang Opera Company was invited
