The site inscribed on the World Heritage List includes two Roman Catholic churches, three Protestant churches, and three Greek Orthodox churches. These churches were built between the 16th and 18th centuries, when the area was a poor cluster of villages known as “Upper Hungary.”

The site vividly demonstrates the rich local tradition of religious architecture, characterized by the fusion of Latin and Byzantine cultures. Due to differing religious customs, the buildings vary significantly in floor plan, interior space, and exterior appearance. This reflects the development of major architectural and artistic styles during their construction periods, as well as how these styles were interpreted and adapted to specific geographic and cultural settings. The interiors are adorned with frescoes, canopy paintings, and other artworks, further enriching the cultural significance of this heritage.
