Michael's Gate

Michael's Gate is located at the end of Bastova and Michalska streets. Bastova is the narrowest alley in the Old Town, where the city’s executioners are said to have lived in ancient times. Michalska Street is a sloping road, and its higher section is flanked by elegant Renaissance buildings housing small specialty shops, art galleries, cafés, food stores, wine bars, as well as outdoor café terraces shaded by umbrellas—making it a lively spot.

Michael's Gate is the only remaining one of the original five city gates of Bratislava. It stands within the walls that once encircled the Old Town, and is a striking white, pointed tower structure. Originally built in Gothic style in the 14th century, it was remodeled in Renaissance style in the 16th century, with a Baroque roof added in the 18th century. It has become an iconic part of the Old Town and castle skyline. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the castle and the city. Legend has it that those who chat between the outer and inner gates will have bad luck. Today, the gate houses a Weapon Museum, featuring mostly medieval arms and armor.
