Trenčín Castle

Trenčín Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Slovakia and the highest point in Trenčín and the entire Váh River basin. It was constructed in the 11th century on the foundations of an original fortress from the Great Moravian Empire. The architectural style of the castle originated in the 13th century, and the late 13th to early 14th century marked the height of its power, as the seat of the ruling dynasty that controlled most of Slovakia was located here. The castle was destroyed by fire during the great Trenčín fire of 1790. After the fire, the lower parts of the castle were renovated, but comprehensive reconstruction did not take place until the 1950s.

The entire Trenčín Castle complex is imposing, surrounded by high walls and towers, consisting of the Zápoľský Palace, Barborin Palace, and Ľudovítov Palace, along with the towering Matúšova Tower. The tower stands 39 meters high, covers a ground area of 12 square meters, and has walls that are 4 meters thick. Within the castle, there is an ancient well known as the “Well of Love,” which attracts many visitors due to the romantic legend associated with it. The “Well of Love” draws countless couples each year who toss coins into it to symbolize their eternal love.
