Heroes' Square

Introduction    Upon entering the square, you will see two symmetrical arched colonnades on either side. Between the columns of each colonnade, there are seven statues of historical heroes. Above the stone walls are two sets of sculptures depicting warriors riding chariots. At the center of the square stands a 36-meter-tall Millennial Monument, with a stone statue of the Archangel Gabriel atop its column. This angel, who shows compassion and comfort to humanity in the Bible, spreads his wings wide as if just descended from the heavens. The bases of the columns feature seven bronze statues of historical heroes on horseback — these were the seven leaders of the Hungarian people during their settlement in the region. This "Millennial Monument" was built in 1896 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Hungarian people's settlement in Europe. The entire architectural complex is magnificent and grand, symbolizing the Hungarian people’s remembrance of their historical heroes and their aspirations for a bright future, despite having endured the ravages of war.

Features    The spacious Heroes' Square is a historic, artistic, and political landmark. On the right side of the square is the largest art gallery in the country, and on the left is the Museum of Fine Arts.
