Gellért Hill is located in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It lies in the Buda district on the west side of the river and offers a panoramic view of the entire city. Although called a hill, it’s actually a small mound, standing at an elevation of 235 meters. In the 17th century, it was a site for religious pilgrimages.

Gellért Hill is named after Bishop Gellért, who was instrumental in spreading Christianity to Hungary’s main ethnic groups during the reign of Stephen I, Hungary’s first king. A memorial statue was erected on the hill in his honor after his martyrdom.

Today, visitors to Budapest must climb Gellért Hill to take in the breathtaking scenery of both sides of the Danube.

There is a castle on the hill, built by the Austrians during the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century. During World War II, German and Red Army forces fought fiercely here. A monument on the hill commemorates Hungary’s liberation by the Soviet Union.

It takes about half an hour to climb from the foot of Gellért Hill to the top, with four or five trails to choose from. If you don’t want to work up a sweat in the summer heat, you can take a bus for an easier ascent.
