Matthias Church

Introduction   Originally known as the Church of Our Lady of Buda, Matthias Church was renamed after Hungarian King Matthias held his wedding here, and it has also served as the coronation site for Hungarian kings. Since the 13th century, it has undergone multiple renovations and witnessed the transitions of different dynasties. This has transformed the church from its original Catholic form — during the Ottoman occupation it was converted into a mosque, and later elements of Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles were added, resulting in the uniquely distinctive church seen today. The church occasionally hosts concerts and religious events. Outside the church, the Holy Trinity Column in Trinity Square was erected in the 18th century by the residents of the old town to commemorate the end of the plague in that century, and it is also a popular spot for visitors to rest. Features   Though its exterior is in Neo-Gothic style, this church actually incorporates a variety of influences including Hungarian folk art, Art Nouveau, and Turkish design. Notably, the white spire and colorful roof add a touch of charm and vibrancy. The church’s interior stained glass windows and murals are also must-see highlights.
