Andrássy Avenue

Andrássy Avenue is a tree-lined boulevard located in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Construction began in 1872 and was completed on August 20, 1876. It was primarily built to alleviate the heavy traffic pressure on the parallel King's Street (Király utca).

The avenue is named after Prime Minister Gyula Andrássy, who supported its construction at the time. It connects Elizabeth Square with City Park, and is lined with beautiful Neo-Renaissance palaces and houses featuring elegant facades, staircases, and interiors. In 2002, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The palaces along the street were designed by leading architects of the time, such as Miklós Ybl, and funded by Hungarian and foreign banks. The buildings were largely completed by 1884, and most were inhabited by nobility, bankers, landowners, and old-established families.

In addition to easing major transportation congestion, Andrássy Avenue is also one of Budapest’s premier shopping streets. The boulevard is home to a variety of cafés, restaurants, theaters, and luxury boutiques, ensuring it meets all your shopping and leisure needs.
