Hungarian State Opera House

The Hungarian State Opera House is located on the famous Andrássy Avenue in the capital city of Budapest. Construction began in 1875, and the building was completed in 1884, opening to the public on September 27 of that year. It is one of Hungary’s premier cultural institutions.

The opera house is built in the Neo-Renaissance architectural style, with elements of Baroque design. The auditorium has a horseshoe shape and accommodates 1,261 seats. Although not the largest in terms of size or capacity, it is regarded as one of the world’s top opera houses in terms of beauty and acoustics. Measurements conducted by a group of international engineers in the 1970s ranked its acoustics third in Europe, after Milan’s Teatro alla Scala and the Paris Opera.

The Hungarian State Opera House’s annual performance season runs from September through the end of June the following year. In addition to opera performances, the venue also hosts the Hungarian National Ballet. Since its opening, it has welcomed numerous distinguished artists, earning widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
