Margaret Bridge

Margaret Bridge is a major bridge in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, spanning the Danube River and connecting the two sides of Buda and Pest. Located in the northern part of Budapest’s city center, it is the city’s second permanent bridge after the Chain Bridge, and has played a significant role in the development of Budapest’s transportation infrastructure.

The bridge was designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin and constructed by his company between 1872 and 1876. It consists of two sections that meet at a 165-degree angle, with a small extension bridge jutting out toward Margaret Island. However, due to lack of funding, this extension was not completed until 20 years later. Currently, Margaret Bridge is one of the most heavily trafficked bridges in the Budapest section of the Danube. On August 21, 2009, it was closed to road traffic for a year-long comprehensive renovation. Since its reopening, the bridge has emerged with a completely renewed look, more striking than ever.
