Budapest is located on the banks of the Danube River and is the capital of Hungary, as well as the country’s main political, commercial, transportation hub and largest city. As the seventh-largest city in the European Union, it serves as an important stopover in Eastern Europe and is known as the “Paris of the East” and the “Pearl of the Danube.”

Budapest is a captivating tourist city, with its most important attractions situated along the Danube. As a result, the Danube embankment, Buda Castle District and Andrássy Avenue have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city boasts 86 theatres, two opera houses, numerous concert halls, music clubs and cinemas, 32 museums and many small art galleries. In Budapest, there are nine bridges spanning the Danube, the oldest of which is the Chain Bridge, also one of the city’s iconic landmarks. Visitors can explore the Chain Bridge, the Dohány Street Synagogue, Matthias Church, Gellért Baths, City Park, Buda Castle, Váci Street, and the Hungarian State Opera House, among others.

Budapest hosts major cultural festivals every spring and autumn, the Hungarian Film Festival in February, an International Film Festival in April, an annual International Theatre Festival, and the Sziget Music Festival in August.
