Introduction   Hydra Island is located 70 kilometers south of Piraeus and has a Mediterranean climate. The peak tourist season runs from late April to October each year. The island has a population of about 28,000, and transportation is entirely by donkey carts—there are no motor vehicles at all. The beautiful scenery has inspired a great deal of artistic creativity, hence the island is known as the “Island of the Artists.” Leonard Cohen, who has sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide, composed many of his moving songs on this small island.

The gold and silver jewelry as well as glass and porcelain sold on the island are reasonably priced and also highly artistic. In the back streets and along the seaside, you can find plenty of delicious and affordable food.
