Gibraltar Museum

The Gibraltar Museum is located in the heart of Gibraltar, just a one-minute walk from St. Mary the Crowned Roman Catholic Church on Main Street. It covers every aspect of Gibraltar’s history and natural environment, serving as the city’s cultural hub and a must-visit attraction for all tourists.

The museum’s exhibits span a wide range of items, from those dating back 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period and the geological origins of the Rock of Gibraltar to contemporary objects. The collection includes a vast array of artifacts, weapons, medals, clothing, coins, stamps, and an exquisite model of the Rock of Gibraltar crafted in 1865 by an officer of the Royal Engineers. Of particular interest to visitors are the museum’s outstanding natural history collections, displayed within environmental contexts. There is also a large photographic gallery showcasing dramatic scenes from the North African battlefields during World War II, the construction of naval harbours, or everyday life in the 19th century. Additionally, it houses the best-preserved Moorish Baths in all of Europe.

Must-see exhibitions include the Great Siege of Gibraltar display and a gallery dedicated to Gibraltar’s most famous painter, Gustavo Bacarisas. The museum also features a room built in the shape of a cave, housing some of the prehistoric finds that made the Rock of Gibraltar world-renowned. Lastly, visitors can enjoy a video on Gibraltar’s unique natural history—from the spectacular bird migrations to the rich marine life along the coast.
