The Rock of Gibraltar

The Rock of Gibraltar, also known as the "Pillars of Hercules," is a massive limestone formation located within the territory of Gibraltar. The rock rises to a height of 426 meters, with its northern end near the border between Gibraltar and Spain. The rock is royal property of the United Kingdom, and its sovereignty is tied to that of Gibraltar. In 1713, following the War of the Spanish Succession, it was ceded from Spain to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht.

Most of the top of the rock is a nature reserve, serving as the habitat for the 250 Barbary macaques that live there. Known locally as the "apes," the Barbary macaques are the only wild monkey population in Europe. Together with the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the rock, they are major tourist attractions in Gibraltar, drawing numerous visitors each year.

The Rock of Gibraltar is considered one of the Pillars of Hercules and was referred to as "Mons Calpe" by the ancient Greeks. The other pillar is believed to be in North Africa—some say it is Mount Acho in Ceuta, while others claim it is Mount Musa in Morocco. In ancient times, influenced by Phoenician mythology, these two pillars were thought to mark the edge of the known world.

A peaceful cable car ride to the summit offers visitors breathtaking views. Standing atop the Rock of Gibraltar, you’ll feel as if you’re on top of the world: Europe lies at your feet, Africa stretches out on the horizon to one side, and the gateway to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean lies on the horizon to the other.
