Moorish Castle

Moorish Castle is a medieval defensive fortress located in Gibraltar, consisting of several ancient buildings, gates, and walls, with its advantageous strategic position being its most prominent feature. Today, it is one of the main tourist attractions in Gibraltar.

The castle’s history dates back to the 11th century and was constructed by the Marinid dynasty, making it one of the most unique structures on the Iberian Peninsula. The predecessor of the "Noble Tower" was a magnificent and expansive complex—stretching to the bastion square at the northern end of Main Street. Moorish Castle comprises multiple buildings, gates, defensive walls, and its most famous parts—the Noble Tower and the Keep. The Noble Tower is an impressive attraction open to all visitors; not only because of its striking architectural structure but also due to its important strategic location.

For a long time, part of Moorish Castle was used as a prison serving Her Majesty the Queen until it was relocated in 2010.
