Europa Point Lighthouse

Europa Point Lighthouse stands atop the southernmost cape of Gibraltar, featuring a white cylindrical structure with a red horizontal band. The tower is 19 meters tall, the light is 49 meters high, and the light's range is 19 nautical miles.

Gibraltar is located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, serving as a strategic gateway from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. As the first visible land marker for ships passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, the Europa Point Lighthouse was established under the Merchant Shipping Act passed by the Senate of the Trinity House in 1838, and the Gibraltar Lighthouse Authority was set up in 1894.

The Europa Point Lighthouse was first lit in 1841, initially using a single-wick oil lamp emitting a fixed light, enhanced by a fixed dioptric lens and reflector. With the continuous advancement of society and technology, the lighthouse’s lighting facilities have also been improved. In February 1994, the lighthouse completed its automation upgrade, retaining existing visual equipment, including a fog signal controlled by an electrical system and a directional 500 Hz reflector installed in the lantern section. The lighthouse is fully automated with no external control facilities. It is monitored 24/7 by the Gibraltar Port Office via a simple telephone connection, which oversees maritime, power, fire, and intruder alerts.

Images of the Europa Point Lighthouse once appeared on a stamp issued on October 1, 2007, as part of the "Panoramic Views of Gibraltar" stamp series, which depicted the Rock of Gibraltar and Mediterranean scenery; it has also appeared on other Gibraltar stamps.
