Trafalgar Cemetery

Trafalgar Cemetery is a cemetery located in Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory. The cemetery was previously known as Southport Ditch Cemetery and is situated on a plot of land south of the Gibraltar city walls, which during the Spanish rule of Gibraltar used to be a defensive ditch.

The cemetery's current name comes from the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. Although the cemetery is named in commemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar, only two soldiers who died of wounds sustained in the battle are buried here. Most of the other graves in the cemetery are those of soldiers who died in other naval battles between 1804 and 1814 or casualties of yellow fever. In addition, many of the gravestones here were relocated from the St. Jago’s Cemetery and the Alameda Gardens.

The cemetery was abandoned for a long period before being restored in the 1980s. In 1992, a monument commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar was erected in the cemetery. On Trafalgar Day each year, people visit to pay their respects. Currently, Trafalgar Cemetery has been included in the list of Gibraltar Heritage Trust sites.
