Gibraltar Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

The Gibraltar Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, located in Cathedral Square. The cathedral is sometimes referred to as "Gibraltar Cathedral" for short, but should not be confused with the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned in Gibraltar. The church is built in the Moorish Revival style, featuring horseshoe arches.

The church was originally built to serve the Anglican worshippers among Gibraltar’s civilian population, as the existing King’s Chapel primarily catered to military personnel. In 1820, the Governor of Gibraltar persuaded the British government to sell a disused building, and the proceeds were used to construct this church. Construction began in 1825 and was completed in 1832 under the direction of Colonel Pilkington of the Royal Engineers. During the building process, a yellow fever epidemic broke out, and the partially completed church had to be temporarily used as a hospital. The consecration ceremony took place in 1838, attended by Queen Adelaide, the widow of William IV. In 1842, when the Diocese of Gibraltar was established, it was elevated to cathedral status, with George Tomlinson as its first bishop.

During World War II, the cathedral sustained no major damage. After the war, Bishop Harold Buxton initiated fundraising efforts to expand both St. Paul’s Cathedral in Malta and Gibraltar Cathedral. The funds raised in Gibraltar were used to build new vestries and a second chapel (dedicated to St. George) in the south aisle, in memory of all those who lost their lives in the Mediterranean region during the war. On the wall behind the baptismal font is a stone from Coventry Cathedral, which was damaged during WWII.

On April 27, 1951, the cathedral’s roof and stained glass windows were damaged by vandals, and some of the stained glass had to be replaced with plain glass afterward.
