Conwy Castle is located on the northern coast of Wales and was built between 1283 and 1289 during Edward I’s second campaign in North Wales. Like many castles in the region, Conwy Castle was designed by James.

Conwy Castle is the most unique among all the castles in Wales and also a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. The castle is divided into two wards: the outer and the inner, each featuring four towers. The construction of the castle and the defensive system of the town of Conwy together cost around £15,000 — the largest sum Edward I invested in any of his Welsh castles between 1277 and 1304.

To some extent, Conwy Castle symbolizes the English occupation of the region. Human activity in the area predates the castle by a long time, with early settlers having built a monastery here. In the late 13th century, the English army led by Edward I invaded the region, and after successfully capturing it, constructed this castle on a site of key military importance in Conwy.

In 1642, the flames of the English Civil War reached the town of Conwy, and the castle sustained some damage. In 1646, Parliamentary forces besieged the castle for over three months before finally capturing it. Subsequently, the damaged parts of the castle were partially repaired. After the war, Conwy Castle was even abandoned for a time.

Today, Conwy Castle stands as an important tourist attraction due to its significant historical value. Many visitors come here especially to see the grandeur of this ancient fortress.
