Lewis

Lewis is the county town of East Sussex in England, a civil parish in England, and the administrative center of the Lewes District. Historically a market town, it is now a popular tourist destination.

Lewis boasts many historic structures, such as Lewes Castle, the ruins of Lewes Priory, the former home of Tom Paine, public gardens, and the 16th-century timber-framed Anne of Cleves House. The Barbican House Museum within Lewes Castle showcases archaeological finds from Sussex, while Anne of Cleves House features exhibits related to Lewes. Both are currently maintained by the Sussex Archaeological Society.

Lewis also has several art galleries, such as the Hope Gallery on Market Street and the St. Anne’s Gallery on Commercial Street, which are great places to view fine local artworks. The Guy Fawkes Night bonfire celebration held in Lewis on November 5th is the town’s most important annual event, spectacular in scale. It not only marks the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 but also commemorates the 17 Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake.
