Lüquan was historically known as Shiyi. According to Records of the Grand Historian · The House of Zhao, Zhao conquered the Zhongshan State and took Shiyi, which then belonged to the Zhao State. During the Qin Dynasty, the area was organized into commanderies, with Shiyi under the jurisdiction of Julu Commandery. In the Western Han Dynasty, Shiyi was governed by Changshan Commandery. By the mid-Han period, Shiyi was briefly incorporated into the Changshan Kingdom, which was granted to Liu Shun, the Changshan King enfeoffed by Emperor Jing of Han.

The Gaozhuang Han Tombs consist of two large, connected tombs arranged side by side from north to south, commonly referred to as the Lingtai.

On July 15, 1993, they were designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site by the People's Government of Hebei Province.
