St Catharine's College
Introduction St Catharine's College was founded in 1473 by Alexandra Catherine. She had been sentenced to death and was to be executed on a wheel-shaped cross. However, when her body touched the cross, the wheel miraculously broke. As a result, the wheel became Catherine's symbol.
This is the origin of the golden wheel emblem above the college gate. The college alumnus William Wotton (born 1666) could speak Latin, Greek, and Hebrew by the age of six, and entered the University of Cambridge at nine—the youngest undergraduate in the university’s history.
