New Walk Museum
In the UK, if you want to see massive fossilized dinosaur skeletons up close, head to the New Walk Museum. Established in 1849, it is located on New Walk in Leicester city center, not far from the downtown area. The museum’s entrance is marked by a grand Romanesque gateway supported by four large white columns—very eye-catching.
Having evolved over more than 160 years, New Walk Museum is now one of the oldest museums in the Leicester region. Its star attractions are undoubtedly the dinosaur skeletons. One of them, a Cetiosaurus skeleton, was unearthed in Rutland, while another, a Plesiosaurus, was discovered in the village of Barrow upon Soar north of Leicester. These two dinosaur fossils are permanently displayed here, drawing many visitors. In addition, other permanent exhibits at the museum include an Egyptology section, a Leicestershire minerals display, the site where the first Charnia fossil was found, and a collection of animal specimens from around the world. The ground floor regularly hosts themed exhibitions, some of which feature permanent displays such as Richard Attenborough’s pottery collection and artworks reflecting the power of war and peace.
