Australian Great Barrier Reef Breakthrough: World’s First Underwater Gallery Now Open

Whether you want to play in the ocean or infuse your activity with a bit of artistic flair, a trip to the Great Barrier Reef to admire its underwater gallery can fulfill both desires at once. No specialized knowledge in literature or history is required to enjoy this exhibition—just bring your oxygen tank and a set of snorkeling gear to stroll through this underwater gallery. This time, the traditional gallery curator transforms into a vibrant coral world, with Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef hosting this unique art show, showcasing six reef-inspired artworks on the ocean floor, 4 meters deep.

 

He said, “Displaying works in a beautifully curated gallery is one thing, but bringing them back to the Great Barrier Reef, where the artistic inspiration originated, is another. I think the concept is about returning art to its original natural environment. It took some time to put this into action, but the results have been remarkable. The light playing across the paintings and the natural surroundings that complement the artworks make the whole experience truly extraordinary.” Price also created a specially made black-and-white patterned giant turtle sculpture titled "Alpha," floating above the exhibition site to guide snorkelers and divers to the underwater display.

 

The artworks were all created locally in Australia using specially formulated aluminum-coated paints. The artist worked closely with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to ensure the artworks enhance the reef without harming the delicate coral ecosystem. The exhibition is dismantled daily to guarantee no adverse environmental impact.
