The town of Payneswick is one of the jewels of the Cotswolds, a boutique settlement composed of silver-gray stone houses and steep streets. This ancient town nestled halfway up the hillside boasts a long history and is also known as the “Queen of the Cotswolds.”

On the town’s main street can be found the oldest post office building in all of Britain, the oldest lawn bowling green, and the most worthy-of-visiting elegant St Mary's Church — many British couples choose this church to witness their weddings. Most magical of all is the churchyard here, where graveyard culture is also one of the focal points of Western culture: legend has it that there are 99 yew trees growing here, but planting a 100th is said to be impossible — none will survive.

A visit to Payneswick Town wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Rococo Garden nearby, the world’s only garden in the Rococo style. Every year in February and March, the elegant snowdrops spread as far as the eye can see in a breathtaking blanket of white, a truly mesmerizing sight.

The town is commendable for its well-preserved medieval character, its simplicity, and its non-commercial atmosphere. Payneswick is like an outdoor museum, seemingly forgotten by time, yet now revealing its unique charm. Aside from winter snow viewing, it is a great destination to visit all year round.
