Winchcombe

Located on the northwestern edge of the Cotswolds, just a few miles north of the town of Cheltenham, Winchcombe is one of the most charming towns from Saxon times, when it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Mercia.

Although the main street can be walked from end to end in just over ten minutes, it is packed with all kinds of antique shops, gift shops, traditional English tea rooms, restaurants, and art galleries. It takes at least half a day to stroll through the entire street and fully appreciate the unique charm of this town. The main attraction in the town is Sudeley Castle and its many beautifully landscaped gardens. Within the castle grounds is a small chapel, which is said to have been built specifically for one of the castle’s owners — Catherine Parr, the sixth wife and widow of King Henry VIII of England. It is the only castle in British history with a royal resting place.

There is a traditional saying in Britain: British nobles are happy to be country folk. This saying is clearly not without basis. As an ancient Chinese poem goes: "I pluck chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge, and gaze afar at the southern mountains."
