Birkenhead is a town in Merseyside, England, located on the Wirral Peninsula on the west bank of the River Mersey, facing Liverpool. The town is known for shipbuilding, serving as a shipbuilding center, and is also a busy seaport.

Birkenhead Park is the city’s principal public park, opened in 1847 as the first publicly funded civic park in Britain. It has had a profound influence on the development of parks in Britain and abroad. The town’s religious landmarks include St. James’ Church and Birkenhead Priory, the latter built in 1150 and recognized as the oldest building in Merseyside. It is a Grade I listed building. The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, opened in 1928, houses a collection that includes Victorian-era oil paintings, British landscape art, pottery, porcelain, ship models, and vessels.
