Telemark Canal

The Telemark Canal stretches 105 kilometers from Skien to Dalen in Norway. Its cultural history, bustling visitors, diverse landscapes, and canal locks remain exactly as they were 100 years ago.

When the canal was completed in 1892, Europeans called the Telemark Canal the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” opening up a waterway from the coast to the mountains with a total of 18 locks along the entire route. From May to September each year, two historic canal boats, the "Victoria" and the "Henrik Ibsen," sail regularly between Skien and Dalen. The slightly newer "Telemark" makes regular trips between Akkerhaugen and Lunde.

Many of Telemark’s cultural treasures are located near the Telemark Canal, such as Morgedal—the birthplace of skiing, the Vrådal Visitor Centre, the stave churches in Heddal and Øye, the wartime history of Rjukan, the Ulefoss Estate, the childhood home of Henrik Ibsen in Skien, Norway’s only porcelain factory—Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, and the Valley Hotel, which features dragon-themed decorations and pointed roofs straight out of a fairy tale.
