Eidsborg Stave Church

Eidsborg Stave Church is a wooden church located in the Tokke region of Telemark County, Norway. It is one of the best-preserved stave churches in Norway today, situated near the Vest-Telemark Museum in Eidsborg.

It is estimated that Eidsborg Stave Church was built between 1250 and 1300, with Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of travelers, as its main saint. Part of the church was rebuilt in the 19th century. The choir was destroyed in 1826, and the new choir was constructed between 1845 and 1850. The later reconstructions did not alter the church’s original appearance and structure. In 1927, Eidsborg Stave Church regained its original look—its 17th-century murals were removed and replaced with paintings and decorations dating back to the Renaissance period, giving the entire church a refreshed appearance. Coupled with the beautiful natural scenery around the church, Eidsborg Stave Church has a uniquely charming appeal.
