Located by Lake Lucerne, the entire museum is set in a large park and is one of the most representative transport museums in Europe, as well as the largest museum in Lucerne. It provides easy-to-understand insights into land, sea, air, and mechanical knowledge and history, featuring exhibits such as steam locomotives, mountain railways, classic cars, horse-drawn carriages, airplanes, and ships. Visitors can also sit in the driver’s seat or explore the engine room to observe the workings of the machinery.

The museum also screens planetarium shows depicting cosmic and underwater scenes, a 360° panoramic screen “Swiss Panorama” and an IMAX cinema. Guests can also take a balloon ride, and there is a self-service restaurant on-site—making it well worth spending a full day exploring.

Take tram line 14 to the Schloesslihalde stop, then walk for 2 minutes to reach the museum.

The Swiss Museum of Transport officially opened in 1959 and is one of Switzerland’s most popular museums. Through exhibitions, theme parks, simulators, interactive radio, and film experiences, it documents the development of transportation and communication.

The Swiss Museum of Transport is the largest mobile equipment museum in Europe. With an exhibition area of 20,000 square meters and over 3,000 exhibits, it is situated by the scenic Lake Lucerne. Rather than feeling like just a museum, it more closely resembles a park. Here, visitors can learn about land, sea, air, and transport mechanics in an easy-to-understand way; in the train simulator section, guests can even try their hand at driving a locomotive.

In the communications museum area, visitors can get a behind-the-scenes look at radio and television studios, and explore the wonders of programming and communication technology. There's also a 200-square-meter playground that feels like a moving picture of Switzerland’s beauty.

Information

Take bus lines 6 or 8 from Lucerne’s main train station. If driving, follow signs to the museum from Lucerne. There is a parking lot with space for over 600 vehicles.
