Hof Church

The twin-towered Gothic-style Hofkirche (Hof Church) was first built in 735 AD. When originally constructed, it was a Romanesque building erected on the site of an ancient place of worship dedicated to Saint Leodegar. It is one of the oldest churches in Lucerne, Switzerland. By the 14th century, the church had been transformed into a Gothic structure, and after a fire in 1645, it was rebuilt in the Late Renaissance architectural style seen today.

Located east of the Chapel Bridge, Hof Church is now the most important church in Lucerne as well as a spiritual center for residents. It also serves as a significant venue for sacred music performances. Looking away from the church, the Chapel Bridge stretches straight toward it, connecting to the high stone stairway leading up to the church, resembling a sacred path of pilgrimage. The interior of the church is exceptionally solemn and majestic, with finely detailed late Renaissance carvings adorning the pews.

Notably, the church houses a pipe organ built in 1640 with 4,950 copper pipes. Concerts are held here irregularly, and the sacred music performed adds to the church’s solemn and grand atmosphere.
