Brienz–Rothorn
The Brienz–Rothorn Railway is Switzerland’s oldest rack railway, having commenced operations in 1892. The mountain train departs right in front of the Swiss Federal Railways station. The bright red train gently carries passengers through six tunnels and two galleries, eventually ascending to the summit of the Rothorn Kulm at an elevation of 2,244 meters. The entire journey takes about one hour, covering a height difference of 1,678 meters and a gradient of up to 25 degrees for a truly unique experience.
Upon reaching the summit, accompanied by stunning views and high-quality service, take a deep breath of the fresh alpine air and be greeted by breathtaking panoramic scenery. There are also numerous hiking trails on the mountain, offering visitors even more opportunities to connect with this beautiful landscape. Operating Hours: The first departure from Brienz is usually at 8:30 AM; the last return train typically leaves at 5:30 PM. Service may be canceled in case of bad weather or low passenger volume, and waiting times may apply during peak periods.
