San Cristóbal de La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located on the island of Tenerife in the Atlantic Ocean’s Canary Islands. The city of La Laguna has an early place in history — the conquering forces of the Iberian Peninsula once fought a fierce battle against the island’s indigenous inhabitants at Acentejo on the day of Saint Christopher, after which the city that was later built was named in its honor.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna has two core areas: the originally unplanned “upper town” and the meticulously planned “lower town.” The lower town was the first ideal urban area laid out according to scientific principles, featuring wide streets, open spaces, as well as many exquisite churches, grand public buildings, and a variety of private residences, all dating back to the 16th to 18th centuries.

Historically, La Laguna has been awarded many honors. In 1510, Queen Doña Juana granted the city its coat of arms; in 1531, Emperor Charles V proclaimed it the “greatest and noblest” city in the Canary Islands; and in 1534, it was further honored as the “city of nobles.” To this day, La Laguna has also been bestowed titles such as “noble city,” “loyal city,” “historic city,” and “City of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.”
