Drottningholm Palace

Drottningholm Palace is the private palace of the Swedish royal family, located on the island of Lovön in Lake Mälaren west of Stockholm (Queen's Island). The building was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The magnificent Drottningholm Palace was originally built in 1537 for the Swedish king’s consort, but the consort passed away before the palace was completed.

Most of the buildings feature Baroque architecture, and from a distance, the man-made yet picturesque natural landscapes surrounding Stockholm can be fully appreciated. Upon closer inspection, the exquisitely arranged rooms of the palace are truly captivating—it is now the site of the Royal Swedish Academy. Outside the former royal residence, there are vast gardens, Chinese-style pavilions and towers, the Drottningholm Court Theatre, and various other buildings in different architectural styles, attracting large numbers of tourists every year. Currently, apart from the private residences of the Swedish royal family, some rooms and collections are open to the public.
