Millesgården

Millesgården is the private garden of Carl Milles, a representative Swedish sculptor. The park is situated on the island of Lidingö in northeastern Stockholm and offers a prime hillside location with views over Stockholm. The verdant garden is home to many of Milles’ own celebrated works, as well as a collection of sculptures he gathered over the years — ranging from Ancient Greece and Rome to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Each intriguing piece adds vibrancy to the garden.

After Carl Milles passed away in 1955, Sweden established the site as a museum in his honor, housing a large collection of his works. Later, the area was expanded into a park along the stone slope, facing the sea. The garden features terraced courtyards set at varying heights, creating beautiful scenery. Sculptures are scattered among fountains and floral displays, with a variety of statues exuding strong classical and folk influences. Many pieces are mounted atop tall columns, giving the impression of figures soaring through the skies or reaching through the clouds — reflecting the artist’s grand and uplifting vision. The entire park overlooks the vast, blue sea, and its staggered courtyards create a delightful, picturesque setting that captivates visitors.
