Nordic Museum

The Nordic Museum is a museum located on Djurgården Island in Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded in 1873 by Artur Hazelius and specializes in exhibits on Swedish cultural history and ethnography from the modern era (starting from 1520) to the present.

The current museum building was designed by Isak Gustaf Clason and completed in 1907. It was originally intended to serve as a national memorial hall, housing artifacts representing Sweden’s historical heritage, but only half of the structure was finished before the 1897 Stockholm Exposition. When the building was eventually completed, it was only one-third the size of the original design. The architectural style draws inspiration from the Dutch-influenced Danish Renaissance architecture (such as Frederiksborg Palace), rather than traditional Swedish styles. The center of the building features a grand main hall, with a statue of King Gustav Vasa—who established modern Sweden—at its heart. The walls are made of brick and granite, while the ceiling is constructed from concrete.

The Nordic Museum is a living-history museum that authentically presents the work and daily life of Swedes from the modern era to the present. It documents the lives of Nordic people since the 16th century, showcasing traditional peasant costumes, Swedish bridal gowns, and the traditional gold and silver crowns worn by brides. In addition, the museum features collections on Sami culture, folk art, and many other items, offering a comprehensive view of Swedish lifestyles—both past and present.
