Solna Church

Solna Church is located in the Solna district of Stockholm County, Sweden, and is the area’s main church as well as one of the few tourist attractions in the region. Known for its striking circular design, it is also called the Round Church and is situated at the southern end of a local cemetery.

The oldest parts of Solna Church date back to the late 12th century, when a Romanesque fortress church made of stone was built, primarily for defensive purposes. The circular central building has a weapons storage room on its southern side, a rectangular choir room on the eastern side, a rectangular nave on the western side, and a sacristy on the northern side. The central tower is topped with a dome, forming the church’s most distinctive architectural feature. The choir room was added in the 13th century, while the weapons room and the sacristy were built in the 15th century. Unfortunately, the church suffered a major fire in 1723, which extensively damaged its roof. The most recent reconstruction took place in 1928, during which medieval paintings and frescoes were restored, making it one of the area’s important cultural heritage sites.

Today, the historic church mainly consists of the central round tower, weapons room, nave, sacristy, and several stone monuments within the grounds.
